Low Egfr For Age

The Optimist

My latest bloods showed my eGFR to be around 65. The doc noted it was on the low side for my age, 42, but still in range. Urea, sodium OK, creatinine slight elevation.

Thing is, I had it measured well over 10 years ago and it was 61.

I wonder if my kidneys are inherently sub-par.

Do you use gear?

How long from your last training session was your blood drawn?

Ive been told its best to have a full week off training before bloods, as training increases/decreases a number of readings. So its best to do zero training and eat normally for a week before bloods.

Out of the 4 readings I've had, they've been on gear and right in the middle of training. First was after a heavy B&C all those 10 years ago which makes me wonder if the damage was done with that. Second was just on TRT at 125mg/week, no training and it had gone up slightly to 75.

Third and fourth were just 300 Prop a week, taken a month apart and again they were 63 and 65.

I'll try leaving a full week from training for the next. Stuff like my creatinine and Creatine Kinase were elevated but I understood this was due to heavy weight training rather than gear.

Did the doctor not say anything 10yrs ago when it was only 61 ?
You have a higher reading now , wouldn’t worry . If it’s in range then it’s acceptable. Don’t over think it, if it was way under 60 they worry

He said at the time it's in range and he wasn't worried about it but I understand that anything less that 60 is stage 1 CKD. It's cutting it a bit fine for my liking.

I'm same age as you and have always had very similar kidney markers
I'm not too concerned for a few reasons
I do intense weight training most days and eat a high protein diet, I also use creatine
these things can effect your creatinine level even when your kidneys are functioning correctly
egfr is calculated using a generic reading based on your creatinine level
So if your creatinine is high, your egfr will automatically be low unless you get a very expensive specific test
If your other kidney markers are fine then that's a good sign they're working OK
Of course, I'm no doctor but that's my take on it after years of consistently similar blood results that I get done privately
If you're concerned then be a normal person for a month
Eat low protein, pull back on intense training and drop certain supps
The longer you leave between training and blood test the better
I've done this and it drastically improved my blood markers which is why I'm not overly concerned

There is another way they work out the readings for Afro/Caribbean people as they are of a more muscular stature. I was told if you are muscular then that is the method you should use to do it. It explains how to do it online. That will probably raise your level more. Don’t know how true that is but it was from a someone with a medical background

Cool thanks, I'm due to switch from the grind of 5x5 Advanced Novice with linear progression to Bill Starr's Power Program with heavy, light and medium days.

Yeah my creatinine is always just over the top end of normal. I keep my protein now to no more than 0.8g per lb of body weight. Urea, sodium, etc all well within range.

I once had a low egfr reading of 55, the doctor told me I was in kidney failure.

I had forgotten not to train close to the test so when I repeated it I had 5 days clear of training and it came back 75. The doctor told me oh sorry you’re not in kidney failure! Useless

I always make Wednesday the last day of training before a Monday blood test and have not had any issues since oh and make sure you’re hydrated before a test as this helps with everything
