How Long After Starting Training Did You First Compete?

I trained consistently from 18-21 and did my first powerlifting meet a year after I started.

I trained sporadically in the last 10 years, I've had a lot of health problems and haven't been able to string together any consistency.

I've been back training since beginning 2017 now and making good progress.

It's a medium term goal to compete in bodybuilding, nothing big just the local gym/area show.

Just wondering how long it took before you first competed?

Bodybuilding seems to be a bit different to PL in that you seem to need to be a reasonable standard before getting on stage!

I started training in 2008.

Entered my first serious comp in 2016, i won TM cutting champion on first try.

A year later i took up powerlifting, did first powerlifting comp 3 months later and done 2 more since then.

As a previous champion of the physique, swapping to powerlifting wasn't an easy decision, but i enjoy powerlifting more.

Omlette approved.

6 - 7 months but that was strongman, competed 3 times in total last one being 2014 i think.

Tried bodybuilding 2 or 3 times but only lasts a couple of weeks, plus i barely have the discipline to diet enough to lose weight never mind get to the levels required to get on a stage.

About 2 years
Did a year in my garage then a year at a PL club prior to first comp, maybe a little less. 3-4 year in that then threw myself in the deep end of strongman and won my my comp after about 6 months of specific SM training

In PL/SM etc beginners are encouraged and cheered on.

If you enter a bb show in shit shape or condition your going to feel a right tit I think!
Everyone has to start somewhere though I guess!

I don't quite understand this statement.

Anybody can get on stage and anybody can get on the platform.

All depends on self-pride and will to win. Why somebody who looks untrained would get on stage is beyond me, just like some bloke totalling 200 in their first PL comp is beyond me.

Anyway I won my 1st SM comp after 3 years and first PL comp after 8 years.

I’ve been training in some capacity and had an awareness of diet since my teens
I’m 37 now and competed in bodybuilding for first time last year. Been taking bodybuilding seriously about 3 1/2 years

Never have
Dont think ever will

Prep looks like self harm and powerlifting was always gettin injured

I've always been torn with this subject. I personally am a bit of a perfectionist and wouldn't dream of entering anything unless I felt I had a good shot at it.

I have friends that have trained for years and then when they've decided to enter, they've done very well because they knew they were good enough to walk away with a win.

I also have friends that want the experience, and go in at a condition I'd cringe at. Some don't place, but some actually do much better than I'd expected.

I was amazed at my last gym how many people competed or were prepping, that I didn't even think looked like they trained.

I feel in a lot of situations the latter are wasting a lot of other peoples time and effort going in for something they clearly aren't in a position to even be considered, but arguably they get an experience from it, and enjoy it. They probably learn a great deal too.

The way I am, I probably miss a lot of experiences and opportunities.

started training when i was 17 competed for the first time at 21 in 1991 and i should not of stepped onstage certainly nowhere near ready........

I initially always wanted to do it.. but never did & have completely lost interest now. I still love training, growing & getting in good shape.. but physically stepping on stage isn't on my to do list in the near future. im 30.. plenty time if I ever do want to. friend of mine, steve.. started training at 45.. competed for the first time at 50yo & does very well. I'm never gonna be top teir, so it'd just be for the experience to say I've done it. if i do though.. it'll be all or nothing
