Hypertension - Take It Seriously

So, the reason I've been totally off forums for a while is because my wife had a fairly major stroke, at age 30. Been totally absorbed in that and helping her rehab.

She is doing amazingly well, and seems set to make a full, or so near as no one would notice otherwise, recovery.

Her stroke, which hit the left side of her brain and so affected her right side and her speech, was entirely caused by hypertension. The infarct is about 20% of her entire brain. No kidney issues, no heart problems, no vascular disease or arterial plaque buildup. Testing determined the cause to be entirely down to genetics and a pretty rare combination of genetic variations that regulate blood pressure and vasodilation.

I was debating whether or not to post about this as I'm usually pretty guarded about posting about my family or personal stuff, but wanted to get it out there by way of a reminder and a warning - if you have high blood pressure, or highly variable blood pressure, or someone you care about has it, please treat it seriously and do all you can to bring it down.

I would not wish what happened to my wife on anyone.

Glad to hear shes making full recovery mate and good advice.. its the silent killer as they say.. mines usually ok but im actually due a check havent for a while!

What sort of bp do you think is the maximum you should be walkin around with? We should make this a bp thread and everyone post it just as a reminder

Maximum 130s IMO especially on gear. Ideally your wanting in the 120s.

Pleased she's back to normal mate, must have been awful.

She had high BP before when she was a lot heavier (she lost over 100lbs) but it dropped right down to normal, or appeared to, once her body weight was good so the docs thought her high BP before was weight related. It turns out that her BP is highly uncontrolled - on a day when she is active and eats well it sits at normal unworrying levels, but just a day or two of indulgence and inactivity and it can surge like crazy- at best it's around 125-135 over 65-75, but it can rapidly spike to 200 over 105.

Mine is kind of similar in that it is very responsive to lifestyle but fortunately not to the same degree. When I'm active and eating well it's usually 115-125 over 60-70, but it can jump to upper 130's over 75-80, so I jump between healthy range and stage 1 hypertension simply based on a few days of lifestyle changes.

Yer i think mine is like that but i dread to check it when am doing “extra” activites shall we say

Docs dont seem too concerned with low 130s
Agree that it should be 120s though
Also we all seem to be aware of the systolic no but diastolic important too

Yep, the current research definitely suggests diastolic (BP between heart beats) is much more important that systolic (BP during a heart beat).

Far less risk to have systolic elevated to 130s, or even 140s or 150s, than to have diastolic go over 80.

Elevated BP between heart beats suggests arterial stiffness, clots, or problems in signalling that regulate vascular relaxation, and all of those issues can lead to new clot formation, hemorrhage and heart strain.

Thanks mate - thanks to everyone for the kind comments.

I think ideally 130-135 absolute topsfor systolic, 120's best, ideally under very low 70's for diastolic - 60's being best. The higher the diastolic though the more risk an additionally high systolic becomes.

i'd also check pulse as well as a few month back days before i got diagosed with DVT my pulse was around 140bts all day for about 4 days running thinking it was my watch and turning it off and resetting it etc and still pulse was the same wasn't until my leg started to be on fire it all clicked in place few days on meds it came right back down to normal.
