I've been increasing the amount of squatting over the last couple of months and at the bottom of the movement I get some pain in my calves, which seems to be getting worse rather than better. I'll start adding some stretching but if anyone else has experienced something similar and has any tips to share that would be great.

If it a calf issue in that position the gastroc muscles are less likely to be the issue..so look at soleous muscle and achillies ,work on mobility in them two areas..prob alot of vids on utube to get you started...but str of soleous and mobility of tendon is a good start..

Worth a try as well. Usually something above/below area giving pain.

Thanks, I didn't previously squat ATG so expect it's tightness that I need to work on with regular stretching. Does seem to be soleus. Will have a look at the video above later once I've got sound :thumb:

Sleeves or wraps? I find the pressure from wraps causes calf pain sometimes, but never get it from sleeves

Just wanted to thank everyone for the replies. I've been doing some stretching and laying off the heavy calf raises and the pain has improved a lot. Managed a great squat session the other day without much discomfort.

    Definitely Soleus that's the issue.

Most likely the answer is... ankle flexion! Your calf hurts because the drift forward of your knee is causing the muscle to stretch and strain. Better shoes could help, or better flexibility to lean back more so there's less forward movement.
