    Exactly.

Thinking past 36 months though, I'm not sure it makes sense.

Can't see the logic of selling a car that you own, to buy somthibg you don't and carry on paying for?

Run fiesta into the ground, you'll get 150k+ miles easily out of it

Id hold on to it mate. Weve a 58 plate gtd golf that we was gunna get rid of a few years ago incase it started costing us money and it never has (touch wood)

Highly unlikely it would cost you more than 12 monthly payments even if it did go wrong.

If like me a car is just a car and your not impressed by flash ones id stick with it!

Your comparisons are a little wrong as the fiesta is not going to cost £4100, as in 3 years time when the smart car would go back the fiesta would still have some value!

Overall owning a second hand car should always be cheaper! Baring any major issues with expensive repair costs!

It was more, can I de risk the next 36 months using the value of the fiesta.

But absolutely as you say, there will be some value left in the fiesta and also after 36 months the cost of another lease would quickly be over and above what the fiesta would cost.

I have leased in the passed and just switched back to owning a second hand car!

When I leased I also included a service package which meant there was no additional service cost over the lease, when I got a puncture I managed to get the car to work phoned the company and they came fixed it while I was at work at no additional charge!

Obvious additional benefits include having a nice new car to drive!

I dont get the lease thing... we looked into it and it costs the same as the car but you dont own it... it only "works" if you just keep leasing or am I missing things?

It's an alternative to PCP which is a structured loan with option to buy at end. Asset that declines in value and you pay interest on the loan and then after the period either hand it back and lose your deposit or make a balloon payment and have a car which has declined in value considerably.

If you own your own car then I wouldn't consider it personally unless it needs replacing and you want a new one.

Car I have I have a on a fully serviced lease package and at end of 3 years hand it back in and consider my options then.

Car I got rid of needed clutch sorting, MOT and other linked costs which would have exceeded value of car. Worked for me in these circumstances.
