Melatonin is a staple supplement for me, both as a sleep aid and as a somatostatin inhibitor. Melatonin is well researched already in the treatment of many illnesses such as insomnia, diabetes, GERD and tinnitus, and it looks like new research shows it holds some beneficial properties for your body composition too!

In this study, 81 women were split into two groups:
    1. 1-3mg Melatonin nightly
    2. Placebo

Over the course of a year, fat mass decreased in the Melatonin group by 6.9% compared to placebo, and lean mass increased in the Melatonin group by 5.2% compared to placebo.

To put this study in context, finding the right dose of Melatonin to use depends on age, individual metabolism and the purpose that you are taking it. As we can see from the above, dosages of 1-3mg were sufficient in showing changes in body composition, doses to aid sleep can be from 0.2mg-5mg all the way up to 10mg for use as a Somatostatin Inhibitor. Research the optimal dosage for your individual case!

    Here we go again.

    Question for you joe joe.

How did they standardise variables between groups that may contribute to reduced body fat and/or increase in lean mass?

Can you give us an idea of what these variables might be?

They didn't have any energy input/output control across groups which is one limiting factor in this study. I would say it still shows great promise as the likelihood of all of the melatonin group by chance being in an overall energy deficit for the year and all of the placebo group being in an overall energy surplus would be a huge coincidence.

How would the Melatonin group increase lbm in a caloric defecit?

Did they standardise the type of physical activity the groups engaged in?

Did they measure ffm relative to total body mass or in another way?

Your the expert. Help me out.

Your caloric intake dictates your body composition

If you eat in a calorie surplus your body composition is not going to change regardless

What if you grew muscle at a faster rate than you store fat?

Would thst not alter your lbm/bf ratio?

My son gets prescribed melatonin, and I've tried one of his 3mg tabs from the hospital pharmacy – the difference in the effect of that one compared to the supplement-grade melatonin (ordered from the US) was night and day (excuse the weak pun). I barely staggered up the stairs and I swear I was asleep before I remember getting into bed.

I wouldn't (haven't) do it again as he really needs them – he produces very little of his own, but it was an eye-opener (or, closer) none the less.

Ultimately, you energy balance in a specified timeframe dictates your body composition. The relationship between your intake and output.

It isn't this simple when pharmacology is brought into the equation. For example, the research on men using Testosterone up to 600mg gained lean muscle tissue, and lost body fat at the same time.
