What should I be taking. Currently I have my protein shake and a bowl of oats or oatcakes.

what you have now is fine, there is no 'best carb' - whatever you digest well and feels you up - id probably have a faster carb if the training session was very hard ..... on a low cal diet prob the most filling or volumous one I can find
recovery shake as soon as i finish workout whilst i drive home (whey iso, dextrose/malto), and then a big meal typically red meat and rice with something sugary also.
