    Howdy all,

New around these parts, been a member on ukm / TM for a bit but never posted anything of worth. Been training for close to 10 years but again, never achieved anything worth shouting about. Now I'm 30 I've accepted the fact that I just train because I enjoy it, it's my 'me time' and I can't be bothered taking up a new hobby!

Training is and has always been all over the shop, it varies depending on what interests me at the time. Hopefully starting a journal will help me focus all of my thoughts in one place instead of flitting from one thing to another. I'm also hoping it keeps me accountable to myself, but we'll see.

    Current stats
    30 y/o
    5 foot 11
Weighed in this AM at 17st 10lbs.

Nowhere near lean, but I seem to carry my weight well in that I wouldn't consider myself a chunker to look at. I've always been heavy, even as a scrawny teenager. Seem to hold weight around mid 17st on 2800kcal. Once festivities are out the way I fancy getting to, and holding at 105-110kg. When I get down to this weight I always feel a lot better.

Training is more strength based these days. I accept I won't ever resemble a BB, so going to try getting my lifts up to a half respectable standard.

I have 1RM's from years ago when I was younger, more focused and partaking in certain 'supps'. But I'm not going to be that guy banging on about what he used to lift.

Recently hit 230kg deadlift, and 182.5kg squat which I'm reasonably happy with. Haven't tested bench or OHP, as I've had shoulder issues I'd rather take time to build the strength back up than push for a max and knacker myself.

I've also been dicking around with some strongman style stuff, for no reason other than curiosity. Training will likely be all over the shop for a bit as even when I put a programme together for myself I deviate within a week or so as I have a terrible attention span. In the new year I do plan on investing in some sort of coach, whether it be a monthly thing or even a one off programme to start with.

Going out for a push session shortly so will throw it up here after.

    push 24/12

    band mobility
    rc work
    bb ohp warm ups

    log press
    50kg x 5
    55kg x 5
    65kg x 5
    75kg x 5
    85kg x 1
    85kg x 1

    monster DB (right then left)
    35kg x 3 / 3
    45kg x 1 / 1
    47.5kg x 1 / 0
totally buggered up the failed rep. everything from the pick up to the jerk to the press was wrong. should have reset. oh well.

    35kg x 5/5
    35kg x 3/3
each arm, zig zagged, so right, left, right, left etc. this was brutal cardio wise.

Feet up Ex bar bench (Ex bar is cambered swiss bar)
    60kg x 5
    80kg x 5
    90kg x 8

    close grip Ex bar bench
    40kg x 15
    50kg x 12
    60kg x 8
triceps pretty much fried at this point.

    side raises
    7.5kg x 20
    7.5kg x 20
7.5kg is heaviest dumbbell I have for now.

not a terrible session. log and DB are a bit disappointing, progression is very slow, and weights are poor considering BW. I do think I need to work on grip strength for the DB as the handle is 50mm thick.

I try to keep in mind until about 4 weeks ago I had never used a monster DB, log, done any cleans, push jerks or even used leg drive, and I'm winging it with learning how to perform/implement all of these. Hopefully soon it'll all click.

Hope we all had a good Christmas for those that celebrate it. Back to it today.

    squats 27/12

    band mobility
    rc work

been doing low bar for as long as i can remember so fancied giving high bar a go. knee sleeves and squat shoes only for whole session.

    40kg x 5
    60kg x 5
    80kg x 5

    100kg x 3
    120kg x 2
    140kg x 3

    160kg x 3
    160kg x 3
    160kg x 2

high bar feeling quite good, will stick with it for a bit. hitting depth was a bit trickier than normal, but might have something to do with the bloat from 3 days unrestricted eating. must remember not to wear boxers when squatting, too much 'compression'.

Last set of 160kg was iffy, set up safety spotters but they were a smidge too high, so clipping them at the bottom threw me a bit.

    axle cleans
    35kg x 5
    45kg x 5
    55kg x 5

    65kg x 5 (split jerk last rep)
    75kg x 3 (split jerk last rep)
85kg x 1 (full clean and split jerk)
85kg x 1 (full clean and split jerk)

first time doing axle cleans, happy enough. cleans were just normal double overhand, not continental. first effort at split jerks too for a laugh. very strange.

    front squat
    60kg x 5
    70kg x 5
    80kg x 5
    90kg x 5
    100kg x 5

have only revisited front squats in the past few weeks, and cant recall ever being above 80kg so happy at that for now. bar slipped on the last rep so was a sketchy re-rack.

    dead hangs
    x 30s
    x 30s

these felt great afterwards. lots of popping and cracking. That was enough for today.

    Push 29/12

Floored with the cold today so was just a box tick session to keep things moving.

    BB ohp
    20kg x 10
    30kg x 10

    40kg x 5
    60kg x 5
    80kg x 4

    cambered bench press
    40kg x 8
    60kg x 8

    80kg x 8
    100kg x 1

    60kg x 12

    banded tricep extension
    x 25 (each arm)
    x 20

    DB front raise (each arm)
    7.5kg x 20
    7.5kg x 14

    DB side raise
    7.5kg x 25
    7.5kg x 20

Sweating buckets and sucking air so left it there. Nothing spectacular. Would have liked the 5th rep on OHP, cambered bench was pitiful. Rarely get sick so never experienced training/numbers take a hit.

    Pull 31/12

Still not feeling 100%, feel like an elephant is sitting on my chest, breathing is tough so keeping reps low and taking longer rests. By some miracle holding steady at 112.3kg.

    BB Deadlifts (double overhand)
    70kg x 8
    120kg x 3
    140kg x 3
    160kg x 2

    straps on
    180kg x 2
    180kg x 2
    180kg x 2

    200kg x 1
    200kg x 1

Axle Deadlifts (double overhand, no chalk)
    75kg x 5
    95kg x 3
    115kg x 3

    straps on
    135kg x 3
    135kg x 3
    135kg x 3

Really struggling now, not with weight but with just feeling gassed.

    Cambered BOR
    60kg x 5
    70kg x 5

Started getting light headed here so decided to wrap it up, 4 sets short no less.

    Rear Delt Flies
    7.5kg x 20
    7.5kg x 15

    Cable Face Pulls
    10kg x 20
    15kg x 15
    20kg x 15

Reasonably happy with today considering, again its weird being limited by feeling crap however I'm happier having trained rather than not bothering as would have been the case days gone by.

    Push B 1/1

Feeling a wee bit more human, albeit still a bit tender from deadlifts yesterday and really not in the mood today.

    band shoulder mobility
    rc work

    log press
    45kg x 3
    55kg x 3
    65kg x 3
    75kg x 3
    85kg x 3

Quite happy at that for today.

    monster DB (right / left)
    35kg x 3/3
    45kg x 1/1

Tried another set at 45kg, absolutely nothing there. Very frustrated as this is such an awkward exercise to get right and there has been zero progression. Tweaked right shoulder a bit on the last clean so binned this off here. Think I'll try get a set filmed so I can see where I'm going wrong.

    farmers holds (per hand)
    60kg x 30s
    70kg x 20s
    80kg x 10s
    100kg x 10s

Really feeling yesterdays deadlifts when getting these off the floor.

    cambered swiss bench press
    60kg x 8
    80kg x 8
    100kg x 6

    CG cambered swiss bench
    60kg x 8
    60kg x 8
    60kg x 8

Much needed day of rest tomorrow.

Things like cleans are annoyingly technical, sometimes it can just be one of those things rather than a technique fault but never any harm in filming to assess form

Totally agree mate, tbh doing it with a bar isn't going terribly, it's just the dumbbell I'm struggling with. Most likely due to the sheer size of the thing.

I suspect my grip is an issue as it's hard to hold the 50mm handle without knurling, so will be adding in more grip work, maybe 2x a week.

    Squats 3/1

Sticking with high bar, knee sleeves and squat shoes.

    band mobility (mostly for shoulders)

    50kg x 5
    70kg x 5

    100kg x 2
    120kg x 2
    140kg x 2

    160kg x 3
    160kg x 3
    160kg x 4

happy at that, 2 reps up on top set, was only shooting for 3 but third rep felt good so went for fourth.

    front squat
    70kg x 8
    90kg x 5
    110kg x 5
    120kg x 2

found these tougher today, got a bit carried away. still happy enough, but will aim to increase reps @ 120kg. lower back and abs still coming to grips with these.

    axle clean
    35kg x 5
    55kg x 5

    axle clean and split jerk
    65kg x 3
    65kg x 3
    65kg x 3

Done full rep, clean, jerk, down, repeat. Brutal cardio, and also on the shoulders. Maybe should have kept it at cleans only. Kept weight at 65kg, will keep tinkering with this to get technique down and decide how to proceed.

    Dead hangs
    x 45s
    x 30s

    Push A 5/1

Cold one today, glad I got a heater for the gym now. Shoulder still iffy after twinging it on the DB.

    bb ohp
    20kg x 8
    40kg x 5
    60kg x 3

    80kg x 3

    60kg x 8
    60kg x 8
    60kg x 3

tried another set at 80kg, not going anywhere, had no power in my right shoulder.

    cambered bench
    40kg x 12
    60kg x 8

    80kg x 5
    80kg x 5
    80kg x 5

    60kg x 10
    60kg x 10

Shoulder pain at top of each rep, quite uncomfortable.

    incline ex press
    40kg x 10
    50kg x 6

Shoulder gave out after 6th rep, too painful.

    rear delt flies
    7.5kg x 25
    7.5kg x 20

    really need heavier dumbbells.

    face pulls
    20kg x 15
    20kg x 15
    20kg x 14

    plate load cable tricep pushdown
    20kg x 15
    20kg x 12
    20kg x 10

throughout session done stretching with bands and rolling on lacrosse ball to loosen shoulder up but nothing worked. I've knackered both shoulders before so very cautious about taking the mick with them. Admittedly my shoulder/pressing strength is comparatively quite weak, so I think on this session going forward I'll take a more volume based approach, drop weights down and work back up.

On the plus side, in theory shoulders should need very littye direct work due to the amount of indirect stimulus they get. I've had a frozen shoulder for close to 5 year and haven't done any compound work on them of any note in that whole time, and only do sporadic isolation work just to cover bases... it's not sound to clever tho with almost everything bothering it
