Muscle Tear In Upper Quad

Alrite gents, I’ve had a problem with upper out right quad for a while now (3 years or so), basically it popped which seemed to be a small tear and ever since then it’s been susceptible to popping/tearing again

Today it’s popped with a right fucking bang twice driving out the hole. It’s very Swollen and painful but I think it’s just a tear in the muscle (dunno which specific one). Had to bail on the barbell but I am able to stand and limp around

Is it possible that the initial small tear created scar tissue and every time I pushed too hard it’s give way again? I almost feel like now it’s torn fully it may be better once it’s healed? I may be being overly optimistic here

And if it is just a tear in the muscle will it heal on it’s own?

I have no experience with legit muscle tears so just looking for answers from someone with some experience

A tear in the muscle itself will heal with rest/rehab but I'd get an mri just be sure whats going on. Remember big Rick that used to post on here? His was partially torn then when he did tear it properly it rolled right up his leg.

Yeah I’ve spoken to a very good physio around here on the phone tonight and he’s advised me on everything

He said to ice it all night and all day tomorrow then ring him tomorrow night and tell him how it feels, if it isn’t a hell of a lot better, basically normal (which we both really know it won’t be) I’ll be getting a scan Thursday night to see what’s going on with it and devise a treatment plan off of the back of that

His hunch is it’s old scar tissue that was re-tearing and it’s finally fully given way, but obviously the question is how bad is it and what needs to be done to get it to heal properly

Either way I’ll be spending some money to make sure it finally heals correctly and I can finally start squatting to get stronger. It’s been giving way every time I get back up in to 250 - 270kg range but never as violently as this

Sounds/feels like I’ve been lucky tbh

I'm surprised at the icing recomendation mate, it will bring swelling down but will reduce inflammation and bloodflow to the area - the bodies healing mechanism. Even the guy who coined the RICE phrase has backtracked on it.

Tbh mate I think it’s purely so it can be assessed Thursday without having to deal with all the swelling etc

I’m back in work Saturday so pushed for time

Hope it gets better for ya. I've heard and seen guys get muscles eaten fast specifically on their legs after injury. Good thing muscle memory exists.

Physio scanned it last night and said there was a lot of scar tissue built up around upper outer quad near the hip and it basically ripped and gave way, the actual healthy muscle tissue is still intact so sounds like I’ve been lucky

Also said I have some quite severe tendinopathy in the glute on the same side so he wants to try and get that sorted whilst my leg calms down and then work to get the leg muscle fibres to repair properly because he said they are a right mess in that area which is why I’ve been having issues

So overall it could have been a lot worse but looks like it’s gonna cost me a fair bit in physio fees to get it right again

Do you inject in to those areas matey or do you think it’s just wear and tear from years of lifting?

Pain in the ass to have to fork out £ but that’s got to be a relief as a tear could’ve been the end for what you like to do in the gym.

Haven’t jabbed in that area for years mate as it’s been niggling me for about 4 years now

It’s just wear and tear and constant niggles that haven’t healed right. It’s popped numerous times in the past but seems like it’s fully give way this time
