Effectiveness Of Bio Oil And Similar For Scar Softening.

In short I have sustained 2 injuries in the last year both which have left massive unsightly scars. One a lacertaion to left forearm. Straight but long and wide cut and the other a severed hand which was cut all over the place.

The second one I am going to live with but have started using bio oil and simliar things from the body shop at the recommendation of my post op physio. The one of the left however will be a year old in November and I want to get a tattoo put over it.

So Im trying anything to bring down the angriness as they said they wont tattoo over an angry scar, which is completely understandable.

I just wonder if these products actually work or if they are just a waste of time and money. They dont cost megabucks but not just loose change either. Want to give myself every chance of improving the first scar in particular as I plan on booking a tattoo in before xmas. I may be wrong but I imagine how it looks after a year is going to be how it will look for life.

I used Bio oil for acne scarring many moons ago but cant remember if it worked very well and I kept losing bottles of it so stopped buying.

Any input folks?

I know my ex used bio oil to reduce her stretch marks and it worked really well ,didn't completely remove them but certainly toned them down a lot.

Yeah I wouldnt expect complete removal. Just a slightly reduce in the redness to convince the tattooist that theres not gonna be a blood fountain when he puts the needle in! Not that Im trying to trick him but I think it might look 'newer' than it actually is. Might take a wander to them over the weekend or something. Might need them to assess it first. Doubt its a GPs role and tbh I hate our Docs anyway so would be reluctant to go

I think it's quite effective with newly developing stretch marks and maybe with recent scars it could help too, but I doubt it will do much for older ones, at least without applying regularly for a long period of time. I've not actually tried though, just my opinion.

Cheers @Simon

As mentioned one is new as in amonth or so and the other about 10 months. I've bought bio oil and a body shop product claiming to do the same thing so going yo use them both in conjunction. On the scar from recent surgery I still have to carry out massages daily as the tendons were completely cut I lost all feeling in my two outside fingers. Scary. The messaging stimulates the nerves whereas the boi oil and body shop stuff softens the new skin tissue allowing for both greater movement and hopefully reduced long term scarring. Movement wise the wrist is doing extremely well. Its basically as flexible as the other hand but the tight skin from the scar restricts free movement a little bit but thats perfectly normal. I may post the before and afters at some point but the picture after the injury is quite horrendous and not for the squeamish. I have been told it looks like something from a horror movie! So although my scars from that are not works of art I was expecting worse. With regards the other I just want it to become less red so that I can have a tat done and cover it. The surgery scar I will just live with.

You can only try at the end of the day!

As per Simon, newly formed scar tissue it can help with slightly, but only really to keep the skin supple to the scar doesn't get tight and possibly worsen and prior to scars forming (pregnancy based stretch marks). Once a scar is formed I not personally found or seen it to make much difference. I guess if it's red or 'angry' that might suggest it being under tension or stress thus blood flow is increased, oil and massage may help soften the area up, reducing the taught nature of the skin therefore reduce the bloodflow and redness

You took pics of the injury ? Typical UGM behaviour I am nearly bleeding to death but wait till the lads see this one lol.

I think the best you can do is just to try the bio oil and see if it calms things down also let the more recent injury a bit more time to recover.

Also Arnica gel is supposed to be really good for surgery scars I use to use it on my kids for bruises they were a clumsy lot and I can say it definitely works might be worth a shot

This will make you laugh. True story

As I was laid on hospital bed with my hand hanging off the nurses asked me if I could take a selfie of my hand and send it to their plastic surgery department on mt phone. I had to ask if they were serious. My phone is enormous so taking 2 handed selfies is hard enough. So eventually the nurse took the photo but I had to send the bloody thing on to plastics using one hand and in unbearable pain. Have you ever heard something so ridiculous. Surely they could have done all of that. Lazy fuckers. All of them were apart from a Dr who probably saved my life. As I was left bleeding out in A&e waiting room (people were going to reception on my behalf and saying to go in before them etc ehich was nice, but to no avail) Anyway a doc appears who is on his way to see another patient and spots me and has me on a bed within a nanosecond stitctching the steries with no pain relief. Probably one of the most painful things I have ever gone through. Got IV morphine afterwards which was nice but about half an hour late. Was actually screaming in pain and my pain tolerance is very high.

A nice ending to the story (well not the absolute end - keep reading) Is that once I was stable I asked to speak to him and thanked him profusely. I asked him what his name was and he said "Dr Salah, Mohammed Salah!!"
I actually managed a good laugh despite the pain. Goal scoring machine by day, A&E Doctor by night.

Once I have been discharged fully I am going to get in touch with the hospital. There were a lot of shocking negatives and laws broke which I feel its my duty to report. However I would like to have Mo Salah commended and send him a gift if thats allowed. I feel for the patient who had to wait but Im sure he/she would understand if they knew what was going on. Saying that I was in hospital 4 days as I had my operation cancelled 4 times at the last minute cos someone came in with a burst organ or something. I understand they need to come first and it was just bad luck but when i happens 4 times you start to get very irritated. The plastics Doctor even said that the longer the op is left the more complex it could become and indeed it did as a 1hour schedfuled op took almost 3. At one point they couldnt find my tendons. They had basically sank as they had been left untreated for so long. I had junior surgeons carrying out the work (not junior per se but not the top dogs) but too my left I had the head surgeon who chatted me through the procedure. I had it done under local so basically just an injection under arm and it goes limp. At one stage he was getting quite frustrated by their inability to find the tendon and was going to step in. Shortly after they found it thank god. Had he not been there I would have been seriously concerned. Fairly unpleasant experience on the whole!

@Irish Beast holy shit mate that's one hell of a traumatic event to go through....jesus asked to take a selfie of your injury just fcukin beggars belief.

And left in the waiting room with such a horrific injury I see the NHS is still up to its normal standard.

Mohammed Salah LMAO

Can't fault you on reporting the treatment you received tbh mate luckily that Dr actually saw how serious your injuries actually were god knows what would have happened if he hadn't intervened. And 4 delays on a op is fcukin ridiculous IMO.

Great to see your on the mend but christ that's horrendous what they put you through
