XR3i or XR2 early 80's

Was thinking I might like to own a decent one of these again!

Have owned both in past and liked them both immensely, had a lot of fun!!

Looked on Autotrader and piston heads, for some reason most for sale are scotland LOL, and I live right down south!!

Anyone else own one of these or know of a half decent one for sale??

I've had both - Black XR2 and Red XR3i - both were great at the time :)

Funny enough I've been looking at XR2s lately and like the gunmetal colour.

It may be worth looking at the car forums to see what's available on there.

We all had hot hatches in the late 80s early 90s as we were living in barracks with no real overheads so bought fast cars lol. Good times :)

Personally I like the old e30 325 bmws! Rear wheel drive fun, 180bhp n awesome looking cars! Real drivers car! Iv had a xr2 and wasn't so keen on it. Would love an old old car again now I don't buy new. I have a 328 and a 523 bmws and a mk4 2.8 4 motion golf (not keen on this either) if I could afford a decent e30 325 I would but cheap are rusty and none rusty cost a fair wack now

@Little Ron

I bought a C reg XR2 a few year ago from Lancashire for a family friend who lives overseas and it was in good nick and is still on the go now

Fast ford & performance ford Mags might have a few in

Usually worth looking on the Ford forums as well mate. If i'm looking for a car the forums are the first place I look as more often than not you can find a car that has been well looked after.

Love the XR3i's, have some cracking memories of going on long drives wtih my mum in her white convertible XR3i as a kid

An old fiesta xr2 with a rs turbo engine in it is a barrell of laugh.pistonheads, passionford etc are worth a try and I would travel for the right car.these cars nowadays are far and few between for a decent one.

you moving to a council estate mate and wanting to fit in??

be sure to park it on a random patch of grass and take the wheels off to. that should look nice and authentic :)

Twat lol

you seen price of decent one these days?? doubt see many on council estates lol

Will sit nicely next to my porsche and my jag :thumb:

MK2 XR2 all day long. They are currently at a decent level price wise beofre they rise in value so a sound investment if nothing else.

Things to look out for. Rust between the front and rear numberplates!!!! Especially the front end, slam panel and front inner wings. Also under the bodykit, sills and arches. CVH is fairly bullit proof but valve stem seals go making it smoke. and the pick up in the sumps tend to bloke making the top end rattle. Cheap as chips to fix and work on though compared to most other motors.

Actually been looking to buy one myself for the collection but just invested in a E36 drift car so I can go have a bit of fun.

XR3, less desirable and therefore won't benefit value wise. But if thats what you want I'm sure its not about returns.. It's just nice to know you can sell it on easily if you lose interest.

When I ever buy a retro car. .the first place I hit up is the forums...enthusiasts look after their cars

haha, id be all over and escort cosworth should funds allow.

any decent classic is 10'000 plus isnt it.

Love the nippy Fords, up to around mid 90s.

AHF, youve made it clear before you know feck all about the workings of motors :D - but cars of this age are going to need work - not only because of their age, but the older tech has shorter service scheduling too. A lot of parts are a little harder to source now, especially trim parts etc, so if you are going to get one, get on the owners forums - great network of guys who can source bits, recommend decent mechanics/tuners - hell some will even come round and help you out with the basic jobs for petrol money and a few cups of tea :D

I had a Mk IV XR3i, first of the electronic fuel injection but still essentially the Mk3 shell and look (with a facelift) - imo its the perfect compromise. Not ancient mechanical old tech injection, very reliable, driveable, and a piece of piss to work on. XR2s never came with EFI, so you are limited there although you could go to the boxier Mk3 Fiesta which came in injected XR2i guise; the exact same underbonnet config as the age of XR3i I had.

Loved the car, I'd still have it just now if money hadn't been so tight, and I hadn't done that whole "OMFG I'm going to be a dad, I simply MUST have 4+ doors now because thats what all superdads do" thing

I loved it just for what it was, simple, reliable, reasonably economical, and a (slight) bit of nip to it - but be under no illusion, these aren't fast cars. Don't let fond recollection get to you. They are clunky over our shit roads, tinny, unrefined, and yeah, slow. Most standard boggo hatch nowadays will rape them on any road, any condition. On paper, tbh, they are shit!

But if you love em', you love em', its the character of em, the honesty and simplicity.

@Weeman had a Fiesta RS Turbo, basically the Mk3 Fiesta with the same EFI engine, but with a turbo strapped to it. I practically rebuilt the thing on the street for him, it was like building something out of lego it was so piss easy!

Ditto my Escort, bullet proof reliable, but as Ron says, stem seals went - well - they didn't fail - they just popped off the valve stem guide, so the engine got smokey. Easy fix, don't even need to take the engine apart!! New set of seals, job done.

If there is one enemy, its simply rust.

You don't do things by halfs tho mate, and I know you would be prepared to pay more coin for a better example - again, get on the enthusiast clubs forums, get talking, get to know folk. Be prepared for more snobbery, insecurity and arrogance than in bodybuilding tho

The XROC would be a great start - XROC - Home

Or maybe you could be tempted to go the RS Turbo route, still not ballistic in standard trim, but a good deal warmer than the XR series... could go Cosworth route, now you are talking :D - The Ford RS Owners Club

PS fully aware you said early 80s, I'd reccomend you move it along and compromise for late 80s versions, but your call!

Problem with all these sorts of cars is that you remember them to be different to what they actually are performance wise!

The fiesta even though they handled well were a bit gutless, i'd get an early Escort RS Turbo instead of an XR2 or an XR3i, at least you've got a fair bit of poke and it's easier to squeeze more out if need be.
