Deads - How do you do yours?

Interesting point trebor. I have not had sugery but when I get a flare up it takes ages to settle as you pointed out. I wont go mad with the grip stuff but want some size increase in my forearms as they used to be considerably bigger. More gear would be an easy way out but want to attempt it through hard work!

Don't use straps with alternate grip, just double overhand :)

Try some grip work, strongman style if you have farmers, if not just hold some heavy dbs for a while, mobster would be your man on grip work.

Chalk is decent really helps, I prefer the my protein liquid chalk to other brands and also real chalk blocks.

Hook grip is horrible pain wise but apparently the thumbs get used to it but you have to work up to a decent weight, I didn't get that far

Tbh unless your going on the platform just stick to double overhand and straps

Im not sure what actual hooks are but pretty sure I'd be banned from my Pl gym if I had some

Also just seen mobsters post. Doh.

I hook grip all pulling movements now, hurts a bit at the beginning but once you get used to it there's no turning back!

Alt grip kind of negates the need to straps due to the natural tension and torque it applies - at least it does for us mere mortals.

Due to supination issues that causes an underhand grip to fcuk up my alignment, and the fact that I'm not a competative PLer so don't have to worry about alt grip (and a ruptured biceps 3-4 years ago), I use DOH as much as possible and straps when I have to. I've done a 250 DOH without straps and 260 with (was on for smashing that a few months back but then had a nerve impingement that fcuked up my DLing for a few weeks) so you can get grip right up there without too much effort (IME) if needed but no shame in using straps if you don't have to have an alt grip.

I hate hooks, completely removing the need to grip is, IMHO, not a good way to address a deadlift.

Chalk improves gripping efficiency of that there is no doubt.

And yes, my feelings are hurt by not being included in the list of 'favourites' there LOL

regarding the supination issue (tight joints mean I do too) - I've got some lifters to do what works for me, although I nearly always do DOH now, and that's move the palm forward hand out 2-3 inches at most without it upsetting the pull as you lift and easing any strain on the bicep etc.

fuck that I'm a fanny, one day I'm gonna pull 250 and I want my thumbs to remain attached to my hands at the time lol

My 2 cents.

straps - if you can use them, do. One less thing to worry about. If you want to work your grip then fine, want to 'man up' or whatever then fine. But you'll pull more with straps.

Grip - there is no point alternating grip with straps, keep double overhand. I'd also suggest there is little to no point alternating which hand is under if using a mixed grip.

form - everyone's different, so you need to find what works for you. Main points I try to teach is to drag the bar up your shins. Try and start the lift with it touching them.

your weight should be on your heels, I'll get people to lift their toes off the floor when pulling, it makes a difference.

like a squat, when you approach the bar, it's hips back, not knees forward, try and keep your lower legs perpendicular to the floor.

finally, unless you're pulling is getting onto the elite level ranges, I'd suggest just deadlifting. Don't worry about working on your weaknesses. Do standard pulls, from the floor, and for fucks sake don't hitch!

Always switch grip until a few months ago I pulled my QL muscle pulling 250, not to mention my left bicep is half an inch bigger as is one lat.

Now I dropped back down and worked up using over-hand grip and just as strong with a bit chalk.

Tried using a olympic grip with thumbs under finger, ok for 1-3 reps.
